Padova's CMC SIG Event
Hi Everyone,
I just thought I'd give you an update on the EuroCALL CMC SIG Event we held last week at Padova University. We had about 65 participants representing 17 different countries: Ireland, Russia, Spain, The Czech Republic, The UK, Germany, Italy, Sweden, Switzerland, France, Belgium, Holland, Mexico, Poland, Bielorussia, The US and Hungary.
The first day, we had 3 successful workshops, one given by Antje Neuhoff our national rep in Germany. Nice work, Antje! Contemporaneously, one was given by Sarah Guth and Lisa Griggio whose workshops are always informative and hands on. In the afternoon, Robert O'Dowd presented a lively workshop to round out a very successful launch to our CMC Event.
There were 15 more presentations on Friday and Saturday with the plenary given by Robert O'Dowd. The participants seemed quite enthusiastic throughout the event. (We're still waiting for the results of our online feedback questionnaire.)
Even though the last item on the schedule, the panel discussion on CMC and Language Learning: Future Drections, took place after noon on a beautiful, sunny Saturday with Venice beckoning, we still had great attendance. Mirjam Hauck, who was on the panel, says she is already planning next year's CMC SIG Event!
We had the blessing of our Language Center, of course, as well as the the University of Padova. The Event was also endorsed by the city of Padova and the Veneto Region. We were even able to get the Event recognized by the Ministry of Education so that high school teachers could get credit for it as teacher training.
Several participants expressed the desire to have a place where they could find partners for intercultural exchanges. Any ideas of where we could put this...maybe attach a wiki to the EuroCALL site, under SIG>CMC?
It's only about 4 months until the EuroCALL Conference in Hungary! Wow, time flies. Any news about the 2009 Conference venue?

National rep. tasks and future projects?
Dear friends,
I have been preoccupied with my old project POOLS which ended its funded period on October 1st – after which we have had to compile a final report with several copies of all outcomes. A rather time consuming affaire.
I can now look back at all the tasks that have been neglected in the past months. Fortunately my conscience is very good because my memory is bad - In relation to Eurocall I simply cannot remember what I actually “promised” to deliver, it was something about a national report, but in which context? And (a dreaded word) deadline?
I am heading for a one weeks vacation on Saturday so with some luck I’ll not learn about my tasks until after that;-)
The POOLS project is over (at least the money is gone) but the partnership is now growing and becoming a network of grass root practitioners (that is my hope). I am now thinking of future EU funding possibilities for setting up a network in partnership with Eurocall, i.e. Eurocall could make some money from assisting the network. POOLS will never be a competitor to Eurocall as the aim is language teaching in general with a focus on methodology, and POOLS could become a Eurocall asset as a feeding network to Eurocall. Comments appreciated!-)

All Eurocall 2007 recordings now online
Hi All! In case you haven't already heard, all the recordings are now available on the conference website. On top of the keynotes + the panel, there are more than fifty recorded parallel sessions. Now, there is a chance to listen to the ones you missed during the conference :)

Recommended books for George
Here are some suggestions. I’ve left out Warschauer, Levy and Chapelle as they probably already are on your list. Also any books by James Paul Gee and Allan Luke are worth checking. From the language learning perspective James Lantolf, Gordon Wells and David Block (especially “The Social Turn in Second Language Acquisition”)are on my must read list. Mark Prensky has also written some interesting stuff on the new learner generation.
